DUKE NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE [DNME] with Brian Howard, cello
We’re Indecisive People: featuring a performance of Imaginary Lines (after Scelsi) by
Marc Jensen, the winner of [dnme]'s 2009 Call for Scores
The Duke New Music Ensemble [dnme] returns to Brody Theater on Duke University's East
Campus for a concert entitled "We're Indecisive People," featuring a performance of
Imaginary Lines (after Scelsi) by Marc Jensen, the winner of [dnme]'s 2009 Call for
Scores. Over 60 works by 41 composers from around the country were submitted to this
unique competition, all of which were scored for an unspecified instrumentation, able to
realized by a variable group of musicians and performers.
[dnme] will also be joined by cellist Brian Howard, performing works by Michael Torke,
Chen Yi, George Rochberg and a premiere by Duke graduate composer Ben Crawford. Crawford
invites members of the audience to bring their laptop computers to interact with the
musicians via wireless network, manipulating various aspects of the live performance.
The concert will end with a special performance of Dutch composer Louis Andriessen's
seminal "Workers' Union," an 18-minute raucous and unrelenting piece for an unspecified
group of instruments. The work has the entire ensemble playing self-chosen pitches in a
unison, driving rhythm. In his performance instructions for the piece, Andriessen
notes "only in the case that every player plays with such an intention that his part is
an essential one, the work will succeed; just as in the political work."
PROGRAM:
Michael Torke, The Yellow Pages (1985)
Chen Yi, Yang Ko (2000, arr. 2004)
Ben Crawford, New Work (2009)
Marc Jensen, Imaginary Line (after Scelsi) (2007)
George Rochberg, Duo Concertante (1960)
Wang Jie, Music for the Joy of Sextet (2006)
