Why: The Duke Self Knowledge Symposium, supported by a campus grant from the Kenan Ethics Institute, is proud to host a film series this Spring entitled “Authentic Happiness.” The pursuit of happiness is central to our lives, but is rarely explicitly discussed. Our goal in this series is to promote deeper thought and discussion about what happiness really is, what leads to a happy life, and what personal ethics has to do with happiness. On Thursday, March 27th at 7PM in McClendon Tower media room 2, we will begin our series with the award winning classic "Zorba the Greek," a vivacious portrayal of a man passionately in love with life. Following the screening of the film we'll hold a discussion centered on the ideals of happiness, passion, and authenticity. We're looking forward to hearing your unique perspective on the issue. This event is made possible by funds from the Duke University Self-knowledge Symposium and the Kenan Institute for Ethics. Give us your comments and let us know if you're coming at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=25322960067 For more information about the Duke Self Knowledge Symposium go to: http://dukesks.blogspot.com/

Why: WILD SIDE (dir. Sébastien Lifshitz, France, 2004, 93 min) tells the story of Stéphanie (played by real-life transsexual Stéphanie Michelini), a jaded transsexual prostitute who leaves Paris to take care of her dying mother (Josiane Storelu) in the country. She brings along her two lovers, a street-hustling Arab boy, Jamel (Yasmine Belmadi), and a Russian ex-soldier named Mikhail (Edouard Nikitine). While Stephanie and her mom come to grips with their troubled past, Mikhail has his own problems dealing with his mother back in Russia, as does Jamel who finds his lifestyle not warmly accepted by his conventional family. This is a film about crossing barriers sexually, personally, and even--to comical effect -- linguistically, as Mikhail does not speak French, so everyone has to communicate in the commonly shared broken English. Why: Shortbus / dir. John Cameron Mitchell USA 2006 101 min.( Admission for age 18+ only!) Please be aware that SHORTBUS contains graphic sexual material. The film explores the lives of several emotionally challenged characters as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex in and around a modern-day underground salon. A sex therapist who has never had an orgasm, a dominatrix who is unable to connect, a gay couple who are deciding whether to open up their relationship, and the people who weave in and out of their lives, all converge on a weekly gathering called Shortbus: a mad nexus of art, music, politics and polysexual carnality. Set in a post-9/11, Bush-exhausted New York City, SHORTBUS tells its story with sexual frankness, suggesting new ways to reconcile questions of the mind, pleasures of the flesh and imperatives of the heart.
