SNMA Youth Science Enrichment Protocol

Why: The Youth Science Enrichment Protocol (YSEP) is an educational pipeline program of the SNMA which seeks to stimulate minority students' interest in science at an early age through creative, interactive science lessons and mentorship. The YSEP curriculum consists of science related projects and activities designed by SNMA members. The five areas that will be taught are the Mouth and the Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Digestive, and Central Nervous systems, with additional focus on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Stress. The members also serve as role models and provide mentorship for the young, minority students.

The Durham Rescue Mission provides year-long housing and counseling or educational and training support for people going through a transitional period in their lives. MLK Million Meals Event - Second Shift

Why:
On January 21, 2009 Duke and NCCU students will join together to package 75,000 meals to be sent overseas to crisis-burdened areas and school lunch programs to feed children in developing countries, such as Haiti, Bolivia and Ghana. Ask anyone who has participated in the past - it's a really fun event. Lots of music, a gong, and people running all over the place! We need Duke students, faculty, and staff to sign up for either the 5:30-7:30 p.m. shift, or the 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. shift. Transportation is provided to and from the West Campus bus stop and NCCU's Walker Complex.

Duke Community Garden Commemoration and Workshop

The Nicholas School of the Environment student organization Farmhand and the undergraduate Duke Apiary Club in partnership with SEEDS (South Eastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces - http://www.seedsnc.org/), the Duke Martin Luther King Commemoration Committee, and the Environmental Management Advisory Club (EMAC) invite you to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on Martin Luther King Day, January 19th to participate in a half-day garden workshop and community celebration:
- Come and learn about the founding of the Honey Patch, an experimental, student-run gardening project
- Discover the many facets of gardening: composting, slow-drip irrigation, raised beds and apiculture
- Contribute to the garden’s maintenance and construction with hands-on activities
- Participate in a commemoration of Martin Luther King Day, the Duke and Durham community and the garden itself as a step toward building a more sustainable food system

Participants will pick one activity to participate in and contribute to.
A. Construction of compost bins
B. Building garden sign and planting commemoration trees
C. Hive Inspection and Honey Extraction Demonstration
D. Assembling Drip Irrigation System

All are welcome to attend the presentation by Tom Philpott and the garden commemoration, but space is limited for the workshop component.
