Where: The Scrap Exchange, 548 Foster Street, Durham
Why: The Scrap Exchange (http://scrapexchange.org/) is a nonprofit creative reuse center located in Durham, North Carolina who’s mission is to promote creativity, environmental awareness, and community through reuse. Since 1991, The Scrap Exchange has been collecting industrial discards such as fabric and wallpaper samples, buttons, test tubes, stone and ceramic tiles, stickers, zippers, and much more. These reclaimed materials are then distributed through the Scrap Exchange retail store on Foster Street, community events, parties, and workshops. On Saturday, December 6th, volunteers will help Scrap Exchange staff organize and prepare inventory. If you like crafts, sustainability, or you just want to check one of Durham's most unique and vibrant non-profit organizations, sign up today by emailing kan2@duke.edu or calling 919-434-4224.

Where: One World Market 811 Ninth Street, Durham, NC
Why: One World Market is Durham's only non-profit store devoted exclusively to the mission of fair trade (http://www.oneworldmarket.info/). The volunteer-run store features hand-made crafts and artwork created by craftspeople from 50 countries that are struggling economically, including impoverished regions of the United States. One World Market works to build reciprocal relationships between individuals and communities in developed and developing worlds in order to improve the well-being of the poor, both locally and globally; to provide work with dignity so as to end the cycle of poverty; to preserve and strengthen indigenous cultural heritage, including traditional craft techniques; and to teach the community about the economic situation, daily lives, culture and traditions of people whose goods they sell. On Saturday, November 29th, volunteers will gift wrap purchases as a free service for One World Market customers (using recycled gift wrap, of course). So, if you love fair trade goods and wrapping presents, sign up to volunteer today by contacting Kim Novick (kan2@duke.edu or 919-434-4224). Space is limited for this event.

Where: Falls Lake Watershed - East Durham
Why: The UNRBA is a nonprofit coalition of local governments and others working together to protect drinking water supplies, aquatic ecosystems, and water-based recreation in the Falls Lake watershed. Thanks to a grant from the Home Depot Association, the UNRBA and the Sierra Club are planting trees along Lick and Little Lick Creeks and their tributaries to improve water quality. Trees like ash, sycamores, and oaks are not only beautiful, they can also provide shade and improve aquatic habitat. Stream banks in the Piedmont are forested in their natural state. These forested areas, or "buffers," protect the stream bank from erosion and prevent pollutants from entering the stream and getting into our drinking water supplies. Please join us as we plant native trees from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm in East Durham on Saturday, November 22 and Saturday, December 13. You'll learn how to properly plant trees and how our waterways filter pollution. We will provide directions and other info when you RSVP., Please contact Kim Novick (kan2@duke.edu, 919-434-4224)to sign up. Refreshments

Why: Duke vs. UNC annual blood battle. The Duke American Assembly for Men in Nursing along with the Duke School of Nursing has challenged UNC to see who can collect the most blood during the month of November. There will be 4 more blood drives on Duke Campus this month. There are 3 drives at the school of nursing on the 14th from 11am-3:30pm, and the 17th and 18th from 11:30am-4:30pm. And their is a drive on the 19th from 11:30-4:30pm at the Bryan Center. All donations on Duke campus will be counted toward the competition and the winner will be announced at the halftime of the Duke-UNC football game. Go to www.duke.givesblood.org for more information and to sign up for a spot to donate. Please donate. The competition aside, there isn't a much better cause than giving blood and life to the many people who need it.
