Volunteer at Durham Food Bank
Contact: jfs13@duke.edu
Sponsor: GPSC Community Outreach
Where: 708 Gilbert Street, Durham, NC 27701
Why:
Volunteer at the Durham Food Bank on Saturday, November 15 from 1pm to 4pm. Warehouse volunteers sort fresh produce into smaller boxes, repackage products from food manufacturers and distributors, and put bulk items into family size portions. I do not know what project we will be doing but it may or may not be messy, so wear comfortable clothes and closed toe shoes. Please contact Jennifer Seger (jfs13@duke.edu) to RSVP and fill out a consent form.
By volunteering at the Durham Food Bank, you make a tangible contribution to your community. For every hour worked by volunteers at the Food Bank, 317 pounds of food is distributed to our network of partner agencies who serve the 400,000 people at risk of hunger in our service area. To learn more about hunger in North Carolina or how hunger is affecting your community, please visit http://www.foodbankcenc.org

DETAILS
Date: Thursday, October 23, 2008 - 7:00pm - 8:15 pm
Where: Sanford Institute of Public Policy, Room 05
Contact: Frank DiSilvestro, fdisil@gmail.com
Why: Community organizing is an important, yet often misunderstood practice. Recent comments during the presidential campaign have re-ignited the public's interest in the subject. Influential leaders ranging from Martin Luther King to Cesar Chavez could be described as community organizers, yet the practice of "organizing" remains a mystery to many professionals in politics and policy today.
This interactive session will address the following questions:
·What is "community organizing"?
·What strategies/approaches work well?
·Who is organizing in Durham and how can I get involved?
Ivan Parra, Director of Durham C.A.N., will be the featured presenter. As co-founder of the Latino Community Credit Union and former director of El Centro Hispano, Ivan has extensive experience with local and state-level organizing.
Food and drinks will be provided, please RSVP (fdisil@gmail.com) if you think you may attend.
