Why:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY WITH LARGE CATS/CARNIVORES IN PITTSBORO (www.cptigers.org)!!

How would you like to spend time with a few tigers, some kinkajous, a jaguar, a prowl of leopards and several other large carnivores?? Then you should sign up to volunteer at the Carnivore Preservation Trust, only a few miles down the road in Pittsboro, NC! CPT is a wildlife sanctuary, providing homes to carnivores in need of rescue and educating the public about what threatens these animals: in the wild, in the pet trade, and in the entertainment industry. We took two groups to CPT this summer, and it was a hit. Sign up quickly to ensure you can get a space.

GPSC has reserved TWO group volunteer shifts on Saturday, October 20, 2007. The morning shift goes from 8:30am until about 12:30pm, and the afternoon shift goes from 12:30pm until 4:30pm Each shift is structured for a short orientation, some manual labor on site, and then we will be treated to an hour long tour of the CPT facilities. (Note: Normally, it costs $12 for adults and $7 for kids to tour the facility!) This is a fantastic opportunity to receive up close and personal time with some truly amazing animals while lending a helping hand to one of the Triangle’s most unique nonprofits.

CPT allows adults and kids to participate, so if you want to bring your little ones, feel free to sign them up as well! BUT - Please be sure to read the information below about the participation of minors, though, before you sign up. I have posted some helpful tips from CPT about the volunteer experience.

WE HAVE 20 SPOTS AVAILABLE (no pun intended towards the leopards) FOR EACH SHIFT. Please e-mail Michelle Newman at mrnewman@duke.edu with your name (and the names of any other volunteers you may be signing up), and a phone number at which you can be reached (in case of last minute info for volunteer day). If you have any minors participating, please provide their age with their name. It will be the volunteer’s responsibility to get to CPT the day of the event, but if people express interest, we can try to arrange carpooling as the event gets closer.

Please note that we will probably doing manual labor at the facility like cleaning out enclosures, etc. There is a risk of posion ivy, wildlife encounters, etc. If this is something that does not appeal to you, it may be best to not sign up!

With that being said - what are you waiting for??? Sign up today and reserve your space!!!!

(Please make sure you read the information below before committing yourself to this event)

In terms of clothing, the following is necessary for work in the compound:

- Closed-toed shoes or boots.

- Long pants.

- Short sleeve shirts are okay, but please bring a long sleeve shirt as well because we handle poison ivy.

- Rain gear if necessary
