The GPSC Community Service Committee is organizing a series of volunteer opportunities with the Durham Rescue Mission (DRM). On Saturday, May 26th graduate/professional student volunteers will prepare and serve a meal in the DRM’s soup kitchen. Volunteers will meet in the top floor of the Bryan Center at 1:45pm. We will carpool to the DRM Men’s Campus on 1201 East Main Street, arriving at about 2pm. At the DRM we will cook and serve dinner for needy and homeless guests. Dinner will start at 5pm. The meal and clean-up period should last until about 6:30pm, at which point volunteers are free to leave. This year, the profits will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle. We need about 10 people to assist with taking tickets, checking IDs, set-up and break-down, bartending, etc. This is a great deal since normally tickets cost almost $20 and volunteers get in for free! We will go the distance with a one mile and a three mile walk route and 30-mile, 60-mile, and 101.5 mile bike routes.
The WALK route will take place in downtown Raleigh.
The RIDE route will go through Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties, thereby touching all of the Alliance of AIDS Services - Carolina service area. Water, snacks, and port-a-johns are provided on both the RIDE and WALK routes.
Finally, Walkers, Riders, and Volunteers will enjoy a rousing closing ceremony at the State Capital in downtown Raleigh.
