Slash Party

Why: The annual Slash Party is this Saturday at Players! Chapel Hill is on fall break this week, so you won't have to fight for parking spots. There is no cover if you wear a costume, and there two $50 bar tabs awarded to the most creative costume and the sexiest costume. So bring a great costume! There will also be free gifts (it will be a glass of champagne, if they let us) at the door starting at 9:30pm. So get there early! Also, red bull and absolut are also sponsoring the party, so expect to see their representatives there!

Football Tailgate

Why: Make sure to come to the last tailgate of the season! The game starts at 1:30, so this is an early tailgate. We will be serving Dunkin Donuts with coffee (and optional Irish cream). We will also have beer as usual. So come early and enjoy the free food and drinks!

Want to enjoy free food and drinks (beer!) and socialize with fellow graduate and professional students from Duke and UNC? Come to the Duke-UNC Graduate and Professional Student Mixer this Friday, starting at 7pm in the UNC Graduate Student Center. A fun time is to be had by all. Due to the possible large turnout for this event, please do not anticipate a full meal for the food. It's a good idea to have dinner before going to the mixer. We are going to try to have enough drinks to last a while.

Thirsty Thursday at The Tavern

Fat Tire will be on sale for $10 per pitcher.  As an added bonus, Thursday is karaoke
night at The Tavern!

Community Outreach will also be providing drink tickets for anyone who brings an item
of canned food.  Help your community and get rewarded for your philanthropy.  Be sure to

Homecoming Tailgate

Why: Join fellow graduate and professional students in celebrating the homecoming football game! Tailgate starts at 4pm in front of the Wilson gym (triangular grassy area right by Towerview Rd). As usual, the student life committee will be providing drinks and food (BBQ catered by Q-shack with vegetarian options this time). In order to make the tailgate an enjoyable event for everyone, we are going to start strictly enforcing a no-keg-stand policy. Make sure you bring your student ID and a legal ID that shows your age. Each student ID holder is allowed to bring one guest. We will also be raffling off 50 free homecoming T-shirts. Alumni of the graduate and professional schools that are back for homecoming are invited to the tailgate.

G&P Students/Alumni Networking

Homecoming weekend is here. The Duke Alumni Association and the GPSC Student Life Committee are co-sponsoring the first graduate and professional students/alumni networking event in recent years. More than 50 alumni, some of whom hold graduate or professional degrees from Duke, have expressed interest in meeting with current G&P students in a networking event. Registration is required, and we can only guarantee a spot at the event for the first 70 students who register at http://tinyurl.com/l5ujmu.

Food and beverage will be served at the networking event. You will be contacted by the GPSC Student Life committee within a day after your registration.


Latin Dance at Club 9

Why: El Kilombo is a nonprofit all-volunteer-run community center in Durham that holds a monthly Latin dance benefit at Club 9 to support our community-based work (kids' literacy, ESL, affordable housing, computer literacy and internet access, and more). The monthly event starts with a free introductory salsa lesson, followed by a great mix of bachata, reggaeton, salsa, and merengue. Free salsa lesson at 10pm. The cover charge of the night is $10 without RSVP, $5 with RSVP to clubcimarron@gmail.com.

Thirsty Thursday is a monthly social event hosted by the GPSC Student Life Committee where we go to a bar in Durham or Chapel Hill and hang out over drinks and snacks. 

Alivia's Durham Bistro was a hit in the summer, so we are bringing it back for the first Thirsty Thursday of the school year. The Student Life committee will be purchasing a controled amount of alcolic beverages and appetizers for people at the event, and Alivia's will have extra drink specials for the night. Come and enjoy a good Thursday night with fellow graduate and professional students.


Back to School Party
