Topic: Roshi Joan Halifax on Bodhidharma - Part II

This week our Meditation and Dharma discussion offers a great introduction to Zen Buddhist practice.  We will listen to a recording of a dharma talk by Roshi Joan Halifax, abbess of the Upaya Zen Center in New Mexico.  Roshi Halifax talks about the the history and origins of Zen Buddhism, particularly the founder Bodhidharma and his journey to the East.  The 15-minute talk will be followed by a discussion, sitting meditation, and chanting.

International FoodFest '08

Why: The International Association would like to give y'all a warm welcome back to Duke. As the weather continues to heat up, it is almost time to spice it up at the International Food Fest!

FoodFest is an International Food Festival that IA hosts on the BC Plaza every Fall. Many different groups of students get together to cook representative foods from their cultures and/or countries and serve it at the event. Anyone can participate and IA pays for the cost of the food. Student Performers will also entertain the crowd.

Continuing our tradition of culinary excellence and festivity, this year's Food
Fest will be held on 3 October Friday at the Bryan Center Plaza from 4 – 7pm.

National Geographic presents An Evening of Field Research and Exploration, September 20th at 7:30 pm in Page Aud.

Why: National Geographic and the Nicholas School will host “An Evening of Field Research and Exploration,” at 7:30 p.m. in Duke’s Page Auditorium.

The evening event, which is free and open to the public, will feature presentations by three National Geographic explorers. John Francis, vice president of research, conservation and exploration at National Geographic, will share highlights from his research on seals in the Juan Fernandez Islands of southern Chile. Adventure filmmaker and author Rick Ridgeway will recount his 275-mile journey on foot through the Chang Tang region of the Himalayas to the high-altitude calving grounds of the elusive Tibetan antelope. Nicholas School alumnus Luke Dollar, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, will present his research on Madagascar’s endangered predator, the cat-like fossa, and his efforts to work with local villagers to conserve its dwindling habitat.

Triangle-area students interested in learning how they can become a National Geographic Young Explorer are invited to attend a free workshop, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

The workshop is open to all students, ages 18-25. It will be held at Love Auditorium in the Levine Science Research Center on Research Drive, on Duke’s West campus.

Advance registration is required.

National Geographic Young Explorer Grants support research, exploration and conservation-based field projects in anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, biology, climatology, conservation, geography, geology, paleontology, oceanography, mountaineering and polar exploration.

Students attending the workshop will be given an overview of the Young Explorer grant process, including tips on how to make a successful application. A panel of recent Young Explorer grantees will be on hand to share advice and present their grant-winning field projects and future plans. After lunch, selected area students will have the chance to pitch their own ideas for Young Explorer projects to panels of National Geographic staff and grant committee members.

To welcome Duke Chinese newcomers, DCSSA will hold a newcomer orientation on August 21th. DCSSA committee, DCSSA clubs, Duke Chinese Christian and Duke China Forum will introduce themselves to the newcomers during the orientation. DCSSA adviser Prof. Xiao-fan Wang will deliver a speech on how to better prepare the newcomers for life here at Duke. We will also distribute DCSSA discount card which covers many nearby Chinese restaurants and grocery stores and it is freeNewcomer airport pick-up volunteers will receive their gas compensation at the orientation. DCSSA newcomers please come and join us for some useful information and fun. Everyone is welcome to attend our orientation.
