Human Trafficking: A Panel and Discussion

Tuesday, April 8th

7:30 – 9:30PM

FRANKLIN CENTER 028

(For directions, see http://www.jhfc.duke.edu)

COMPLIMENTARY DINNER PROVIDED!
Please RSVP to nancy.robbins@duke.edu by Monday, April 7th.

HRWG member Katia Dantas has put together an incredible panel of speakers:

Mr. Pravir Pandey, Indian Government Official, Ministry of Home Affairs, who will present the findings of the research conducted for his Masters Thesis on Refugees and Sri Lanka Migration in India.

Donna M. Bickford, Director of Carolina Women’s Center, who will discuss the issue of trafficking in persons for sexual exploitation. The Carolina Women's Center is hosting a Conference on Combating Sex Trafficking on April 3 & 4, and Dr. Bickford will present the discussions that will take place in this conference.

The meeting will center around discussions of human trafficking at the international and local levels. This is a timely topic as this form of modern-day slavery is increasingly important in any discussion of human rights.

We hope to see all of you out there next Tuesday! Make sure to RSVP to nancy.robbins@duke.edu by midnight on Monday so we can make sure to have enough food (and enough space!) for everyone.

Communities 'health' themselves - the Jamkhed model and community-based primary health care in rural India

Date: Friday, April 11, 2008 - 1:00pm - 2:00 pm
Contact: Nora Dennis, nw9@duke.edu
Sponsor: International Women's Health Alliance
Where: Duke South Purple Zone, rm 0126 (large conference room). Directions from West Campus: Walk along the Academic quad away from the Chapel, past Perkins, Bostock, etc. until you come to the Davison Building entrance to Duke South.
Enter Duke South, walk past the elevator on your right and keep going down that hallway.  The hall will veer right at the water fountain.  Continue on the hall as it turns from carpet to tile.  Go through a set of double doors and turn right.  You will be walking towards a purple wall.  You will find the “purple elevator” to the left of that wall.  Go to the basement and turn left out of the elevator. Room 0126 will be to your right.

Why:

The Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) in Jamkhed, India, has been a pioneer since 1970 in developing the principles and practice of comprehensive, community-based primary health care (CBPHC).  The Jamkhed model has become internationally known as a successful, sustainable approach of building the capacity of communities to address their own health needs, through empowerment, equity, addressing root causes/social determinants (e.g. poverty, women's status, caste system), etc. We have established an international institute, where people (students, professionals & community members; from government & NGOs; national & international) from all over the world come to learn from the staff and villagers about this approach. In this presentation I will describe the Jamkhed model, including the principles of CBPHC.

Internships (US, India) and electives/courses (India) available for medical, nursing, public health, allied health students, faculty, staff.

Joint Meeting of the Human Rights and Global Health Working Groups

Date: Monday, March 24, 2008 - 8:30pm - 10:30 pm
Contact: nancy.robbins@duke.edu
Sponsor: Duke University Center for International Studies
Where: John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies, Rm. 028. For directions, see http://www.jhfc.duke.edu
Why:

Is there a human right to health? If not, should be there be? If so, does that include a right to health care and who should provide that? This joint meeting of the GHWG and the HRWG will feature brief presentations by group members on the traditional status of "health" within international human rights law, on recent efforts to advocate for global health through a human rights framework, and on arguments that have been raised against viewing health (or, at least, health care) as a human right. Come join the discussion!

If you would like to read up before the discussion, we recommend you take a look at the 3 documents that comprise the International Bill of Human Rights (the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights - all available at http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu6/2/fs2.htm), and two brief fact sheets on health and human rights put out by the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/hhr/HHR%20linkages.pdf and http://www.who.int/hhr/Right_to_health-factsheet.pdf).

If you expect to attend the meeting, please RSVP to Nancy Robbins (nancy.robbins@duke.edu) by 12:00 Noon on Monday, March 24th so we can order the right amount of food. See you on Monday night!
