Student Actions Day for Darfur

Why:

On Thursday, April 19th, Duke graduate students, professional students, and undergraduates will collaborate to hold a Student Actions Day for Darfur. This day will consist of several activities designed to raise awareness and encourage action with respect to the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Volunteers will urge passersby to contact their representatives and ask them to support current Darfur legislation. In addition, volunteers will read aloud the chilling stories of refugees who have survived the Sudanese government's murderous campaign. In the evening, Sudanese refugees now living in Greensboro, NC will share their own stories in person.

Volunteers are needed either to work at tables throughout the day, or to read monologues between 12pm and 2pm. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Andres Luco at andres.luco@duke.edu


Human Rights Working Group Meeting

Why:

The Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) is an association of graduate and professional students from Duke and UNC dedicated to educating themselves and the Research Triangle community about global human rights issues. The HRWG's main activities include bi-monthly meetings consisting of student presentations and discussion, sponsorship of human rights-related lectures, and human rights activism. The HRWG is funded primarily by the Duke University Center for International Studies (DUCIS).

At this meeting the group will designate co-coordinators for next year and discuss activism projects with respect to targeted divestment from companies associated with the Sudanese government and more equitable prenatal care in North Carolina.

Complimentary dinner will be served at the meeting.

You'll have plenty of time to interact with the panelists.
