Panel discussion - Old Problems, New Solutions? How the elections and the economy will impact policymaking in 2009

Contact: Alesha Daughtrey, ad72@duke.edu or 919-943-3445
Sponsor: Living Policy Forum, Sanford Institute of Public Policy
Where:

Rhodes Conference Room, 223 Sanford Institute

Why:

A panel of four legislators – representing the Durham and Duke communities at the federal, state, and local levels – will offer their perspectives on how the post-election political climate and the current recession will impact policy priorities at their respective levels of government.

The federal perspective: Obama administration & Congressional priorities

            Congressman David Price

State-level implications of the economic crisis and challenges for the 2009 legislative session

            State Sen. Floyd McKissick

            Special challenges for local government

Brenda Howerton, Member, Durham County Commission (invited)

Mike Woodard, Member, Durham City Council

What are the hard choices that policymakers and government executives will face in the upcoming year?  What policies are likely to be shelved until revenue streams strengthen, and which have the political support to be implemented even in hard times?  How can we best balance declining revenues and increasing needs for government services?  Does the economic environment actually help to create opportunities for bold policymaking in certain areas?  To what extent do the historic elections of the United States’ first African-American president and North Carolina’s first female governor affect attitudes towards policymaking and government?

Our panelists will speak to these issues, and hold an open Q&A session with attendees to address your policy priorities and areas of concern.

For more information or to RSVP, please contact Alesha Daughtrey at ad72@duke.edu or (919) 943-3445.

The Duke Entrepreneurship Education Series (DEES) is a comprehensive program designed to introduce all Duke students from both graduate and undergraduate schools to the key concepts necessary for a future in entrepreneurship, small business, or venture capital.

The inaugural series will take place from September 2008 to January 2009, and each event will be taught by a leading entrepreneur or venture capitalist.

Our next event takes place on November 20th, and subsequent events will take place on regular Thursdays thereafter.

The series is designed to connect students from all across the Duke community, including the business, law, engineering, and life science fields. The goal of the series is to not only practically educate, but to increase the likelihood that exciting developments and ideas from the lab will find the key collaborators necessary to translate innovations into fully-fledged companies.

The majority of events are front-loaded into September and October, for the express purpose of giving students, earlier, a stronger foundation to participate in a variety of activities in the Duke community, such as the Duke Startup Challenge, the Duke Entrepreneur, Markets and Management, EVCC, VCIC, Venture Fellows, and more.

Each event will start with a social hour and refreshments, and then continue with the same after the speaker, to better facilitate interaction between constituencies throughout the school.
