Oh yes, it’s that time again…..a Call for Abstracts for the 16th Annual Biological Sciences GRADUATE STUDENT SYMPOSIUM The Symposium will be held Friday November 9th and this year’s keynote address will be from Dr. Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Senior Vice President, Research Drug Discovery, at Genentech, Inc.  Come join your fellow graduate students, postdocs, and faculty to show-off all your hard work.

All selected speakers will receive a $100 honorarium.  Additionally, just participating in the poster session makes you eligible for a drawing to win a monetary prize.  So put together a poster with your latest and greatest data or recycle that poster from a conference or retreat.  Practice giving a talk to a large and diverse Duke audience.  We are also looking for artwork and images for the abstract book...those selected will be awarded nicely!  Times wasting….submit those abstracts and images by October 12th.

WiSE: Pump up Your Professionalism with Sharon Hill

Learn essential networking skills such as the power of a handshake, the magic of eye contact, and the secrets of small talk. Sharon spent more than 20 years as a development and marketing manager at IBM. She was elected Chairman of the Raleigh/RTP Black Diversity Network Group, a position she held for five years at IBM�s largest site. As a Toastmasters International award winner, Sharon now is the president of Sharon Hill International, through which she teaches seminars focusing on American business etiquette, effective speaking techniques, and preparing students for corporate America and others. This interactive workshop will be followed by a book signing / sale of Sharon�s recent books: 35 Tips for Students to Succeed in Corporate America, and Wild Woman’s Guide to Etiquette: Saving the World One Handshake at a Time. The interactive workshop will start with a short effective speaking lesson, followed by speed networking practice in rotating pairs, and will close with a casual dinner. Mr. Holmes is the CEO of Acuity Edge, a management consulting firm dedicated to providing the highest quality of strategic-level service for corporate, university, government, and venture capital clients. He enjoys the interface between technology and business as found in university tech transfer, corporate IP management, and new entrepreneurial ventures. Mr. Holmes is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program at Duke University.

Brandy Salmon, Karthik Gopalakrishnan, Amy Collinsworth (bios given below)

Amy Collinsworth, PhD, Associate Director, Duke Office of Licensing & Ventures. Amy is responsible for managing Duke's portfolios in the areas of orthopaedics, pharma manufacturing and adaptive control systems. She brings to Duke an established track record of success in evaluating the commercial potential of new technologies, strategic IP portfolio management, and closing license and venture deals around university IP. Prior to Duke, Collinsworth was a scientist at Cogent Neuroscience, a Durham-based biotech startup company. She received her BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Carolina and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.

Karthik Gopalakrishnan, PhD, is responsible for managing Duke's portfolio in the areas of immunology, neurobiology (Parkinson's, MS ALS,lupus) and imaging chemistry. Gopalakrishnan joined Duke in early 2004 as manager of Research Resources and was the University’s main contact for Materials Transfer Agreements before moving to the Office of Licensing & Ventures (OLV). Prior to joining Duke, he was a postdoctoral visiting fellow studying human genetic diseases at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Gopalakrishnan earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from TIFR, India.

Brandy Salmon, PhD, MBA, Associate Director, Duke Office of Licensing & Ventures. Brandy is responsible for managing Duke's portfolios in the areas of cardiovascular, diabetes, and metabolism therapy. She brings to the OLV a broad range of experience across multiple sectors of the health care industry. Most recently, Dr. Salmon held a position with Merck & Co. where she managed strategic marketing activities for the Atherosclerosis Franchise. Prior to working for Merck, Dr. Salmon held a position with a venture firm and gained operational experience as Director of Business Development for a start-up biotechnology company spun out of Washington University. Salmon holds an M.B.A from the Fuqua School of Business with a Health Sector Management concentration and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in microbiology and immunology.
