Why: Looking for an excuse to get out of lab/library early on a May Friday? Come help us beautify the courtyard of this Durham Elementary school. Pull weeds, add mulch, plant perennials and seeds to help bring new life to this courtyard that was left lifeless by new construction. The courtyard is the primary playground for preschool and kindergarten classes. And all students see the courtyard as they walk around the school. A few hours of hard work will really pay off by beautifying the space and attracting birds and butterflies. Please RSVP to Julie Roy at jar7@duke.edu

Come out, get your hands dirty, and make new friends as we assist Lakewood Elementary in maintaining their school's garden. The garden is very important to Lakewood as children use the garden to learn about all aspects of the natural world: plant and animal lifecycles, composting, where food comes from, care for the environment, enjoyment of the beauty of flowers. The garden also provides a primary experience for developing literacy and math skills. Activities will include weeding, pruning, and digging...nothing glamourous about the work, but having our assistance will mean the world to the people at Lakeview Elementary. Please RSVP as soon as possible to jar7@duke.edu.
