Reviews of The Great Game

I went and saw this last Saturday evening and had high hopes. Before you go I would suggest reading the following reviews:

http://media.www.dukechronicle.com/media/storage/paper884/news/2007/02/15/Recess/Theater.Review.Let.The.Game.Begin-2722340.shtml

http://www.newsobserver.com/105/story/545077.html

I think one quote from the N&O captures it well: "That "The Great Game" sails by relevant issues only emphasizes how glancingly it deals with them."

The Great Game has great costuming and set, and there is good movement on-stage. At times the lighting is intrusive (almost bashing you over the head with reds and blues to set the mood) and the sound effects are always coming from the top of the proscenium's arch which can be distracting ("why is there is a ticking clock coming from heaven?"). The acting is fine, but the plot and lines are seriously lacking. The play deals with some very tragic, exhilarating topics, but none very well or indepth... either the play itself, or this production doesn't say much. I left the theater wondering what the message was. Racism... Imperialism... Romance... Espionage... sounds exciting right? Afterwards, you will be able to state how each of those did play a part in the performance, but if you go in looking for any of them, you'll also come out feeling cheated.

For students the tickets are $5, if you like costuming and set, then it is an OK use of your time and money, pay anything else or spend any more time on it and you've been cheated.
