The Duke University Law Library is pleased to offer a graduate assistant position for a candidate skilled in empirical research with an interest in social science research related to legal issues. This is an excellent opportunity to be on the ground floor of a shift in the landscape of legal scholarship to include an increased level of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Requirements:
The successful applicant must be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in social science or be a Masters level student who has completed a significant social science research project. S/he will have completed courses in research methodology and demonstrate an understanding of the wide range of approaches in empirical research, preferably in the social sciences. Completion of a J.D. or LL. M. program in an ABA accredited law school is preferred but not required.
During this appointment, the graduate assistant will be expected to help the library develop a plan to support law faculty doing empirical research. This preparation will include: developing resource guides that point faculty to existing data sets and other resources in empirical research; aiding in the selection of statistical software and providing training on the selected package; attending relevant faculty discussions of empirical research projects in the law school and, possibly, other social science disciplines on campus; developing a training program for interested faculty and students seeking to include empirical research in their scholarship and assisting in the selection of resources for the library?s collection to support faculty doing empirical research. There may be opportunities for participation in conferences on empirical research in the law.
This position is for a period of nine months at 20 hours per week, on a schedule to be agreed upon. The rate of pay will be $16.25 per hour.
