Emotions in Motion

A CAPS Personal Growth Workshop

CAPS is offering a 4-session that introduces skills and strategies in balancing and using emotions to help you be successful. Emotions allow us to experience the world fully, have successful, meaningful relationships, and be a complete person. Sometimes, though, they seem to overwhelm us so that it's hard to do what we need to do in academic or social settings. This workshop will focus on ways to create a balance so that small emotional upsets aren't as likely to become overwhelming and to get back on track when they do. We'll also look at ways to use emotional experiences in positive ways so that you feel more satisfied in your work and relationships.

Two workshops will be offered this semester:

  • Session 1: Begins January 29
  • Session 2: Begins on March 25

Both sessions will run for 4 weeks on Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in room 217 Page Building.

For more information or to register, visit the CAPS website at http://caps.studentaffairs.duke.edu , and click on the Outreach and Consultation Link.

Based on a true story, SOMETHING THE LORD MADE tells the absorbing tale of two doctors who bucked tradition and racial prejudice to revolutionize the medical world. Based on a true story, SOMETHING THE LORD MADE tells the absorbing tale of two doctors who bucked tradition and racial prejudice to revolutionize the medical world. The American south in the 1940s could be a fearsome place for anyone attempting to ply a well-meaning trade, as it was riddled with strictly-enforced racial boundaries. The two men in question--Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and African-American lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def)--work fastidiously on a new technique for helping babies with heart problems, and achieve some impressive, and innovative results. Under any other circumstances the men would have been exhilarated by their advances, and widely applauded throughout the medical profession. But the dark heart of the south causes innumerable problems for the brave pioneers, as the prejudices brought to bear on the men become unbearable. Moving and dramatic in equal measures, director Joseph Sargent's film is a bold retelling of a vital chapter in the history of the medical profession.

Based on the life of drug-kingpin-turned-informant, Frank Lucas, who grew up in segregated North Carolina where he watched as his cousin was shot by the Klan for looking at a white girl. He eventually made his way to Harlem where he became a heroin kingpin by traveling to Asia's Golden Triangle to make connections, shipping heroin back to the US in the coffins of soldiers killed in Vietnam. He soon made upwards of one million dollars a day in drug sales. Lucas was shadowed by lawman, Richie Roberts, who finally helped bring the kingpin to justice. The two then worked together to expose the crooked cops and foreign nationals who made importing heroin so easy.

Maceo and Booker T. are the two most important sidemen in the history of soul music. They’re also solo artists whose funk and soul-suffused performances continue to leave audiences in awe.

Maceo was born and still lives in Kinston, N.C., and for years led James Brown’s legendary band; he later joined George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic and has (most recently) toured with Prince. His solo career has been similarly amazing, punctuated by swinging, marathon shows that leave listeners breathless and transformed.

Booker T. arrived at Stax records in Memphis as a teenager, and before he hit 20 his group, Booker T. & the MGs, had scored a top-10 single and begun transforming the color of popular music in America. Jones wrote, sang, or produced many of the great songs that came out of Stax in the early days, but then left for L.A., and has gone on to expand his influence even further: he’s worked as arranger, musical director, or production scientist on a handful of contemporary music’s most important albums. The quality of his post-Stax collaborators—Bill Withers, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Willie Nelson—plus a recent Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, speak volumes about a man nearly always at the center of a deep groove.

The lure of throaty sound waves emanating from the brass of a trumpet, the submission of your taste buds to the sweetness of a Mojito, the conversation between your body and the rhythm of Bossa Nova. This is the essence of Latin Chic.

Have you ever wondered what the bunch of Indian students who always put up a food stall at most campus events are up to? Come, find out how funds raised with your help at fun events like Springternational and the Annual Cricket Tournament have funded a variety of projects in India from health awareness in remote villages to peoples' empowerment through their Right to Information.

We don't just raise funds but also review several projects and visit villages in India to better understand how our efforts at this end of the world can translate to action where it is most needed.

We are a small group of committed volunteers and are always eager to work with enthusiastic folks in the Duke Community.

Please join us for an update of all our activities, projects and financial report for the year 2007 and to learn more about how you can get involved!
