On Opting Out? by Pamela Stone: "Noting a phenomenon that may seem to recall a previous era, NY Times recently described women who leave their careers to be full-time mothers as 'opting out'. But, is this the case? Based on a series of interviews with women who returned home after having children, Stone explores the role that external influences have on women's decisions, and suggests that women are not 'opting out' but instead being pushed out of the workplace."

Books are currently available  at the Women's Center (306 Alexander Ave) for $5.

Please contact dukebookseries@gmail.com to RSVP and for more information.

Is there a human right to health? If so, does that include a right to health care and who should provide that? This joint meeting of the GHWG and the HRWG will feature brief presentations by group members on the traditional status of "health" within international human rights law, on recent efforts to advocate for global health through a human rights framework, and on arguments that have been raised against viewing health (or, at least, health care) as a human right.

Complimentary dinner will be served at the meeting. If you plan to attend, please send an RSVP to nancy.robbins@duke.edu .

The Duke Self Knowledge Symposium, supported by a campus grant from the Kenan Ethics Institute, is proud to host a film series this Spring entitled “Authentic Happiness.” The pursuit of happiness is central to our lives, but is rarely explicitly discussed. Our goal in this series is to promote deeper thought and discussion about what happiness really is, what leads to a happy life, and what personal ethics has to do with happiness.

On Thursday, March 27th at 7PM in McClendon Tower media room 2, we will begin our series with the award winning classic "Zorba the Greek," a vivacious portrayal of a man passionately in love with life. Following the screening of the film we'll hold a discussion centered on the ideals of happiness, passion, and authenticity. We're looking forward to hearing your unique perspective on the issue.

WILD SIDE (dir. Sébastien Lifshitz, France, 2004, 93 min) tells the story of Stéphanie (played by real-life transsexual Stéphanie Michelini), a jaded transsexual prostitute who leaves Paris to take care of her dying mother (Josiane Storelu) in the country. She brings along her two lovers, a street-hustling Arab boy, Jamel (Yasmine Belmadi), and a Russian ex-soldier named Mikhail (Edouard Nikitine). While Stephanie and her mom come to grips with their troubled past, Mikhail has his own problems dealing with his mother back in Russia, as does Jamel who finds his lifestyle not warmly accepted by his conventional family. This is a film about crossing barriers sexually, personally, and even--to comical effect -- linguistically, as Mikhail does not speak French, so everyone has to communicate in the commonly shared broken English.

Have you always wanted to be a role model? Do you want to mentor and show undergrads what your life is like? For the second year running GPSC is organizing a shadow-a-grad/professional-student-day! We will be matching undergraduates interested in graduate/professional school with students in related fields, to shadow them for a couple of hours, a day, a semester - whatever works between the matched pair. We will also have a panel discussion to let undergraduates hear from grad students across a variety of departments/schools.

If you don't know much about the DRM, check out their webpage at

We go once a month, on Saturday and serve either lunch or dinner. Our dinners/lunches are a very special event at the DRM. Many groups go to serve the meals, but we're the only ones who provide hot, non-reheated home-cooked meals! The residents turn out in force when they know we're cooking!

The Duke Self Knowledge Symposium is proud to host a film series this Spring entitled “Authentic Happiness.” Our goal in this series is to promote deeper thought and discussion about what happiness really is, what leads to a happy life, and what personal ethics has to do with happiness. The second movie in our series, playing Thursday April 3 at 7PM in soc psych 126, is “Happiness,” which follows the lives of three sisters and their families. This black comedy attempts to lift the façade of daily life and in so doing allows for ample opportunity to discuss how individuals truly try to obtain happiness.

This event is made possible by funding from the Duke Kenan Institute for Ethics

This event has been POSTPONED due to rain.  Please watch for more details on the new date.

Come out, get your hands dirty, and make new friends as we assist Lakewood Elementary in maintaining their school's garden. The garden is very important to Lakewood as children use the garden to learn about all aspects of the natural world: plant and animal lifecycles, composting, where food comes from, care for the environment, enjoyment of the beauty of flowers. The garden also provides a primary experience for developing literacy and math skills. Activities will include weeding, pruning, and digging...nothing glamourous about the work, but having our assistance will mean the world to the people at Lakeview Elementary. Please RSVP as soon as possible to jar7@duke.edu.
