Start: 10:00 am
End: 12:00 pm

This event has been POSTPONED due to rain.  Please watch for more details on the new date.

Come out, get your hands dirty, and make new friends as we assist Lakewood Elementary in maintaining their school's garden. The garden is very important to Lakewood as children use the garden to learn about all aspects of the natural world: plant and animal lifecycles, composting, where food comes from, care for the environment, enjoyment of the beauty of flowers. The garden also provides a primary experience for developing literacy and math skills. Activities will include weeding, pruning, and digging...nothing glamourous about the work, but having our assistance will mean the world to the people at Lakeview Elementary. Please RSVP as soon as possible to jar7@duke.edu.

Human Trafficking: A Panel and Discussion

The last HRWG meeting of the school year will feature an incredible panel of speakers:
Mr. Pravir Pandey, Indian Government Official, Ministry of Home Affairs, who will present the findings of the research conducted for his Masters Thesis on Refugees and Sri Lanka Migration in India. Donna M. Bickford, Director of Carolina Women’s Center, who will discuss the issue of trafficking in persons for sexual exploitation. The meeting will center around discussions of human trafficking at the international and local levels. This is a timely topic as this form of modern-day slavery is increasingly important in any discussion of human rights.

Make sure to RSVP to nancy.robbins@duke.edu by midnight on Monday, April 7 so we can make sure to have enough food (and enough space!) for everyone.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE LAST

Garbologies are an interactive way to highlight what types of materials are recyclable on our campus and to show how well a specific building is recycling. This year we will be removing a days worth of trash (everything thrown into the dumpster) from the Allen Building and sorting it on the West Campus Quad. All the sorted material will be weighed to determine how much of the trash could have been recycled. This event is always entertaining and will be open to the public. Interested volunteers RSVP to Jessica Moore (jessica.moore@duke.edu).

On April 10th, Duke’s first student ombudsperson, John Blackshear, clinical director of the Academic Resource Center, will talk with GnP students on the GPSC administrator lunch. When facing conflicts or disputes, besides making referrals to appropriate university officials or departments, the students also need a neutral, impartial place to seek help on solving conflicts. The student ombudsperson is served as an independent person for students to consult their concerns about the different perspectives with individuals or groups and find successful approaches to conflict resolution. The issues can range from harassment to a conflict with other students, faculty or staff. If you want to learn more about how to preserve the relationship with professors and other students, or have some general questions or suggestions about the service, please come to the lunch, and you are also welcomed if you only want to chat with Dr. Blackshear to share his personal experience and opinions.

The GPSC administrator lunch series in this semester will invite administrators from various student service centers around campus to talk with graduate and professional students. On April 10th, Duke’s first student ombudsperson, John Blackshear, clinical director of the Academic Resource Center, will talk with GnP students on the lunch. If you want to learn more about how to preserve the relationship with professors and other students, or have some general questions or suggestions about the service, please come to the lunch.

The Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) in Jamkhed, India, has been a pioneer since 1970 in developing the principles and practice of comprehensive, community-based primary health care (CBPHC).  The Jamkhed model has become internationally known as a successful, sustainable approach of building the capacity of communities to address their own health needs, through empowerment, equity, addressing root causes/social determinants (e.g. poverty, women's status, caste system), etc. We have established an international institute, where people (students, professionals & community members; from government & NGOs; national & international) from all over the world come to learn from the staff and villagers about this approach. In this presentation I will describe the Jamkhed model, including the principles of CBPHC.

Internships (US, India) and electives/courses (India) available for medical, nursing, public health, allied health students, faculty, staff.

Come help out at the Duke Forest! We will probably be working to eliminate trails in an area where extra foot trails are no longer needed. The project will involve raking and blocking the trail and generally preparing the area for re-growth. We may also be installing "waterbars", wooden beams that are used on the trail to
control erosion.

The project would be from 9am to noon on April 13th, working out in the forest on trail maintenance. We may also be installing "waterbars", wooden beams that are used on the trail to control erosion. We will be more sure of our exact needs when the date is closer, but those are the likely activities.

Participants should wear clothes for being out in the forest, and bring water bottles. We will provide work gloves, but participants are welcome to bring their own as well.

Group limited to 20 people so please RSVP!

This film is a documentary created by a Duke alumnus that addresses the conflicts of modern Christianity and homosexuality.

Come for free pizza and refreshments.

Purpose: to provoke some intelligent thinking and discussions on a controversial topic that is relevant to us all as rising professionals. Brief discussion will occur immediately after the film if people are interested.

WHAT?: Showing of "For the Bible Tells Me So"
WHEN?: Thursday, April 17th, 5 pm
WHERE?: Duke Clinic Amphitheatre (across cafeteria in ground floor of Duke South)
WHO?: Everyone at Duke Med (as well as others at Duke. BRING FRIENDS!)
WHY?: Free pizza and refreshments AND to provoke some intelligent thinking and discussions on a controversial topic that is relevant to us as rising medical professionals. Brief discussion will occur immediately after the film if people are interested.

Details:

The film is a documentary created by a Duke alumnus that addresses the conflicts of modern Christianity and homosexuality. It depicts families and individuals (one in particular from North Carolina) that have faced this conflict, and introduces principles in theology, psychology, and even scientific theories in order to clarify many misconceptions and myths.

As students at Duke University SOM, it is important to be aware of many different subpopulations of patients and the issues they face that may affect their health and well-being. Being in a Christian-dominated part of the country, religion plays a critical role in many aspects of patients’ lives in this community, namely, views on their own and others’ sexuality. Below is a synopsis of the film:

"For the Bible Tells Me So"
(Daniel Karslake, 2007, 99 min, Color, DVD).

Filmmaker and Duke graduate of '87, Daniel Karslake, created a film that has been short-listed for an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary in 2007.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, Dan Karslake's provocative, entertaining documentary brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible. As the film notes, most Christians live their lives today without feeling obliged to kill anyone who works on the Sabbath or eats shrimp (as a literal reading of scripture dictates).
