IRACAMBI – RAINFOREST SUSTAINABILTY. A REPORT FROM THE FRONT LINE

Iracambi Rainforest Research Center is located in one of the most sensitive and threatened ecosystems on earth: Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.  An area larger than the state of Rhode Island, the Serra do Brigadeiro Rural Development Territory, in the state of Minas Gerais, shelters hundreds of  endangered and endemic species, including the world’s largest population of the highly endangered wooly spider monkey brachyteles hypoxanthus

Is it possible to preserve the traditional livelihoods of these farmers, protect the rare biodiversity of the rainforest, ensure the survival of the wooly monkey, conserve water resources and conduct a mining operation in a way that is environmentally and ethically desirable?

IRACAMBI – RAINFOREST SUSTAINABILTY. A REPORT FROM THE FRONT LINE

Iracambi Rainforest Research Center is located in one of the most sensitive and threatened ecosystems on earth: Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.  An area larger than the state of Rhode Island, the Serra do Brigadeiro Rural Development Territory, in the state of Minas Gerais, shelters hundreds of  endangered and endemic species, including the world’s largest population of the highly endangered wooly spider monkey brachyteles hypoxanthus. It is also an area of family farms, an important watershed and a region rich in bauxite.

Over a three week period in late December 2008 and early January 2009 the region has had almost twice its annual rainfall, resulting in serious flooding, damage to roads and infrastructure.

Is it possible to preserve the traditional livelihoods of these farmers, protect the rare biodiversity of the rainforest, ensure the survival of the wooly monkey, conserve water resources and conduct a mining operation in a way that is environmentally and ethically desirable?

In terms of the development/conservation paradigm, this is where the rubber hits the road. At the Iracambi Research Center we are working on these crucial issues, and we welcome your suggestions, help, and hard work!

Were you or someone you know a target of bullying in school? Bring us your stories and help us convince legislators about the need to stop violence against children in NC schools.  This spring, DukeOUT will be organizing in support of the School Violence Prevention Act (also known as the Anti-Bullying Bill), which will be presented in the current session of the State Assembly. To kick off our advocacy effort we have invited Ian Palmquist, Executive Director of EqualityNC, who will talk to us about the importance of this piece of legislation for the LGBTQ community in NC. This talk will be followed with a small workshop on effective letter-writing and lobbying at the legislature (dinner will be provided).

Come help The Nature Conservancy restore the Crowley/Bowling preserve.  This will create new habitat for the creatures and plants of the longleaf pine ecosystem.  The "Bigger Picture" in this restoration is the connecting of Fort Bragg and the the Game Lands in Hoffman.  Crowley/Bowling sits in "The Corridor" which is between these two very large protected areas.  This planting will help close this gap and allow wild life to travel back and forth between the two areas thus Strengthing their genetic make-up by increasing their available gene pool.

About Ravenna
— Ravenna Michalsen is one of the few full time American Buddhist musicians with ambitions to start an “American Buddhist music movement.” Ravenna trained as a classical cellist for 14 years, and turned to voice and song writing in college. It wasn’t until a retreat with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche in 2002 that the combination of dharma and music occurred. As of 2009, Ravenna has successfully released two albums, Bloom and Dharmasong, both essentially devotional albums: sadness, joy and anger are combined with utter openness and acceptance. Many feature prominent figures from Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, including Yeshe Tsogyal, Machig Labdrön, and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

What is Dharma Music? –- Dharma is a Sanskrit word meaning "the teachings of the Buddha", "the way things are" or simply: "that which holds us back". The Tibetan word for dharma is "chö", which can be translated as: "to heal", "to restore" or "to repair". Dharma music then is music that turns the mind toward the teachings of the Buddha or that which holds us back from harmful action.

Ruben Gonzalez speaks: As the pressure on traditional cultures and natural resources grows,
environmental and human rights advocates find it difficult to articulate a
common agenda. In North Western Panama, the Alliance for Conservation and
Development (ACD) is currently facing these challenges.  While successful in
human rights advocacy strategies, capacity building though legal training
projects, legal actions and aggressive diplomacy, ACD has found it difficult to
generate a common front with environmental organizations that consider the
indigenous rights agenda as too political. The dilemma continues and the
question remains: is it possible to articulate the human rights and
conservation agendas to cope with the challenge of an unsustainable development
model?

Ruben Gonzalez is a founding member of the Alliance for Conservation and
Development, a Panamanian NGO, and a Rotary World Peace Fellow in the Program
for International Policy at Duke University.
