Annual Hertha Sponer Presidential Lecture
Monday, April 6, 2009, 4:00pm
Ingrid Daubechies (Princeton's Program in Applied and Computational
Mathematics and Mathematics Department)
"Applications woven into the mathematical fabric"

Abstract:
Traditionally, applied mathematicians have often been interested in
problems stemming from physics or other natural sciences. In this
framework, the standard paradigm is to carry out, and push as far as
feasible, a detailed non-quantitative mathematical analysis of the
phenomena at hand, even in cases where the computation of quantitative
results is a goal from the start of the study. Typically, the
transition to numerical computation happens only after the theoretical
analysis. The realization that this transition has to be done
extremely carefully in order to give meaningful results, gave rise to
the very rich mathematical field of numerical analysis. Nonetheless,
there is often a separation between the two stages: the mathematical
analysis of the problem at hand in a first step, followed by numerical
analysis to determine good algorithms for numerical results in a
second step. The last few decades have seen the emergence of branches
of applied mathematics in which the requirements of the implementation
not only drive the numerical analysis at the end, but also play an
important role in much earlier stages, including the mathematical
framing of the problem, at the start of the study. This has generated
a different kind of mathematical challenge, stimulated by the
requirements of engineering design rather than natural science
problems, but equally interesting and possibly far-reaching. The
presentation will present several instances of this interplay between
algorithms and analysis, borrowed from work done by the speaker
herself as well as many others; examples are wavelets,
analog-to-digital conversion and sparse expansions.

Register for the DOUGHMAN (http://www.DOUGHMAN.org)!  Durham's innovative contribution to gastronomic-athletics is coming again MAY 23, 2009.  Get four-person teams ready to eat, run, bike, and 'swim' through the beautiful streets of Durham stopping at some of the best restaurants in town.  Blu Seafood, Nosh, Dain's Place, Four Square, and Daisy Cakes will all be sponsoring this year.  Help raise money for the Durham Inner-city Gardeners (DIG) from SEEDS (http://www.seedsnc.org/dig.htm) by participating in this ridiculously fun and exciting race -- DOUGHMAN 2009: Bigger, Batter, Doughier.

The DOUGHMAN is the world's premier quadrathlon.  Four-person teams relay through Durham competitively eating and participating in the traditional elements of a triathlon (bike, run, 'swim').  This year's event is once again raising money and awareness for the urban youth leadership program, the Durham Inner-city Gardeners.  It's a great program for inner-city youth of Durham who plan, cultivate, harvest, and sell organic produce from the DIG garden at SEEDS (the Durham Community Garden).  Check out the DOUGHMAN website at http://www.DOUGHMAN.org for more details.  The race is great fun, it's for a great cause, and there will be great food.  Have fun, feel great, and participate in this year's 2nd Annual DOUGHMAN -- Bigger, Batter, Doughier.  Email us: info@DOUGHMAN.org with any questions.  SPOTS ARE LIMITED so register your four-person teams now.  Registration ends on 30 April so go to http://www.DOUGHMAN.org to sign your team up and get the training plan started.

Economic regulation...International finance...Keynesian theories...Post-corporatist economic liberalism...Hegemony of neoliberal theory.  If you're curious about how all of these fit together, join us for this discussion with Dr. Maderthaner.  Refreshments will be served.

Join us for this special forum --- you needn't be an expert! The recent collapse of the edifice of international finance has confirmed for many the viewpoint of advocates of economic regulation. The logic of unregulated capitalism seems to render it dysfunctional, putting society's productive potential at risk. An unexpected revival of Keynesian practices and theories signals the crisis of post-corporatist economic liberalism and an end to the hegemony of neoliberal theory. Wolfgang Maderthaner is a leading Austrian historian and Director of the Institute for the History of the Labor Movement in Vienna. A response to his comments will be given by Duke's Professor Bruce Caldwell, Center for the History of Political Economy. Come be part of the interactive audience! For a detailed abstract, please email sec16@duke.edu. This event is sponsored by the Society of Duke Fellows (SDF) with support from GSA, and also by CHOPE.

The Center for Instructional Technology and the Libraries are pleased to offer a week-long series of instructional technology and pedagogy workshops May 6 - 12, 2009.  Our sessions are designed to give the busy faculty member and graduate instructor concrete, ready-to-implement ideas for using instructional technology and library resources, and for fostering a dynamic, flexible learning environment in and beyond the classroom. By implementing the ideas presented in these workshops, you can give your course a "makeover," and we're here to help with additional consulting for course design and development. For more info and to register, visit http://cit.duke.edu/events/may2009.html.
