Duke Organizing and Durham CAN: Social Justice Advocacy

INFO ABOUT DO AND CAN:

Welcome to Duke Organizing, a community organizing group on campus that

collectively focuses on issues that concern Duke students, faculty, and

staff and Durham residents. Duke Organizing is part of a larger regional

organization called Durham CAN (Congregations, Associations, and

Neighborhoods) which organizes Durham citizens around various urgent issues

- past successful campaigns have included affordable healthcare (Project

Access), a Living Wage, and county-wide public school analysis (Education).

ONE CURRENT CAMPAIGN: 10% IS ENOUGH

We would like to welcome you to join energies in a very important campaign

that affects all of us:

During this rough economic time, many people are finding it harder and

harder to get by because of high interest rates on their credit cards,

mortgages, and other loans. The rates are being hiked so high that the

principal is never touched until a few years after the loan has been taken

out. Our campaign, "10 Percent Is Enough," equates these high rates to

usury, or economic slavery.

Campaigns have already started at UNC, NCSTATE, NCCU and cities across North

Carolina. As residents of North Carolina, we have the advantage of being

located near Charlotte, the hub of Bank of America and Wells Fargo-Wachovia.

Our letters to these banks have been ignored and so we head to Charlotte to

broker a meeting with them in hopes of negotiations. Please see our video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsAWF5JWzRQ. Join us in our campaign on

October 2nd in Charlotte - bus transportation and lunch will be provided.

For more information, please contact Poorav Rohatgi at pkr@duke.edu.

FOR MORE INFORMATION:

If you would like to be involved in DO but can't make this campaign please

inform Poorav (pkr@duke.edu) and join us for our Durham CAN Delegates

Assembly on October 18th when we will meet with all the Mayoral and City

Council candidates to discuss our priorities.
