Gynecologist recommendations
DURHAM
Sheila Allison
I'd highly recommend Dr. Sheila Allison. She's located on Fayetteville Road near
Southpoint (405-7000). I was referred to her by another health care provider who uses Dr.
Allison as her own GYN. She practices holistic medicine and is an excellent surgeon (I've
had one minor and one major surgery under her care). She does not practice obstetrics,
though, which is actually an advantage for those just looking for a GYN (it's easy to get
appointments and you're seen on time).
Harris and Smith
I have been going to Harris and Smith for several years, and really like them. My doc is
Avis Artis, but I have seen all of the doctors at some point, and they were all good. Dr.
Choi delivered my son, and she was awesome. I have also heard good things about Durham
OB/GYN.
If you want a group for your regular annual exam and pap smear then Harris and Smith is
great. I like Dr. Harris, Dr. Smith and Dr. Artis, tel. 471 1573 (Durham). The first two
are very soft spoken and amicable. If you are pregnant Dr. Smith is very pro-natural
birth and cares about what you want to achieve, natural birth vs medicated.
Harris & Smith OB/GYN is great - I go to Dr. Harris and really like him.
He also treated my mom during her uterine cancer and recovery, and he was very caring.you
can google them to get the website - they are also affiliated with Duke, even though they
are off campus
I've had very good experiences with Harris & Smith OB/GYN. (One emergency surgery, one
healthy baby.) They have six doctors, lots of PAs, and 2 offices in Durham and Chapel
Hill.
Dr. Katrina Avery at Harris/Smith OB/GYN is awesome (and I'm a pediatrician, so I'm
picky!).
I just went to Dr. Charles Harris at Harris and Smith Ob/Gyn. I'm new to the area, too,
and it was the first time I went there, so I can't really give a completely reliable
endorsement (ie, they could have just been having a good day or something). That said, I
was extremely pleased with my visit. Dr. Harris was very, very friendly, relaxed and
professional. I wasn't thrilled at seeing a man, but he was really great. I will
definitely go back there. My visit wasn't nearly as traumatic as those things usually are
:)
Blue Ridge OB/GYN
I use Blue Ridge Ob/Gyn and have been very happy there. I had to have surgery and Dr.
Gunter couldn't have been more wonderful!

Duke Clinics
I see Alice Cooper at the Duke Clinics (not student health), she's a nurse
practitioner, but she's amazing
Alice Cooper (yes, that is her name) is a nurse practitioner in the OBGYN Clinic at Duke
and is absolutely fabulous. Best care I have received in years. She actually shakes your
hand to great you!
I was really happy with Alice Cooper, a nurse practitioner, at the Medical Center. She
was incredibly nice and competent and made me feel very comfortable. She is also a Blue
Cross Blue Shield provider, so if have that coverage you only have to pay 20% of the BCBS
negotiated rates. Just as a warning, it gets very expensive if you need to get blood work
done, so just make certain to go over any prices before you have tests done.
I go to Duke's OB/GYN clinic at the hospital- I like Andrea Lukes. She's efficient and
friendly. I'd like to also say to stay away from Stanley Filip, who is also at the Duke
clinic- he's very patronizing and ignored my complaints.
Elizabeth Livingston and ?? James (I don't know her first name, I just know her as Dr.
James) are both great female providers, but it may depend on your insurance - I think
they are both affiliated with the Fetal and Maternal Medicine division of Duke.
Stanley Filip at the Duke Clinics
Carter Gray at duke women's health clinic is really terrific. I recommend her highly
Duke Family Medical Center
Justine Strand is a PA (Physicians Assistant) and Duke Family Medical Center (Pickens) -
she is head of the Physicians Assistant Program at Duke and does and excellent job.
Kimberly Yarnell (Yarnoll?) over at Duke family Medicine (I think that that's the
name-it's the place on Pickett, across from Trent) is great. I had some problems and she
was completely respectful, listened to me, and spoke with me for quite a long time so
that I would have all the information I needed. Her office staff/nurses are also terrific.
DUKE STUDENT HEALTH
at the duke student health center, i went to dr. sherry huang. she is good and very nice.
I don't know if you're willing to see a male ob/gyn, but Dr. Purdy at the student health
center is the best gynecologist I have ever had.
TRIANGLE FAMILY PRACTICE
I like Paula Jones, Family Nurse Practitioner at Triangle Family Practice
(Fayetteville Rd.). She is very nice, great bed side manner and actually listens to you
which counts for a lot.
DURHAM MEDICAL CENTER
I like Susan Blackford at Durham Medical Center on Roxboro Road (she's a Duke provider).
She takes good time with you and talks to you freely. I'm unsure if she is taking new
patients.

UNC Women’s Hospital
However, if you are pregnant the best place to give birth is UNC Women's Hospital : the
Midwives division www.uncmidwives.org <http://www.uncmidwives.org> (4 midwives and great
delivery and postpartum rooms).
DUKE WOMEN’S HEALTH (CH)
I really like Anne Ford - she's in the duke women's health group in Chapel Hill. but be
warned - it can take months to get an appointment with her.
I have gone to Dr. Shelley Wroth at Duke Women's Health Associates in Chapel Hill. She
was very good; so was all the staff there.
MISCELLANEOUS
I Go to Dr. Mary Dolan in Chapel Hill. Her number is 919-966-2496. She is a
nurse-turned-MD and is great. Very attentive and willing to work with you.
Women's Birth and Wellness Center in Chapel Hill is just excellent. My best experience
yet with a gyn was there

Yarnell
I disagree with the recommendation of Kim Yarnell. I had her at Duke student health for a colposcopy, and it ended up being the most painful experience of my life. She did not respond to any of my questions in a satisfactory way. Other doctors I have discussed this with say it should not be physically painful if performed properly.
