The cheapest thing I could

The cheapest thing I could find was a $14.95 /month roadrunner package from time warner. It's the slowest speed they have available but it's plenty fast for me. It might have been a 12-month promotion thing...I'm not up on 12 months yet so the price is still $14.95 for me.

I've used both road runner

I've used both road runner and verizon DSL in durham. Verizon was reliable and cheaper than RR. I think I paid $25-29/mo or so for a 3MBit connection, this was about 2 years ago. I currently have RR's 7Mbit connection for $35/mo. I have room mates, so I prefer the faster connection with RR, but living  by myself DSL was fine. One thing to consider is that DSL has a nearly constant speed where cable lines like RR will slow down with increased network traffic in your area (like apartment complexes). Verizon offers cheaper DSL packages at like 1Mbit, I think they're about 20/mo. Be sure to request "dry loop"DSL if you aren't interested in a phone line from Verizon. They'll add a $25/mo land line to your apt or house which will make it more than road runner unless you specifically ask for a dry loop connection (doesn't require a phone line to be activated).

Verizon

I had Verizon DSL before moving to Durham, and stayed with it here.  Not as cheap as I would've liked (though cheaper than RoadRunner I believe), but no problems so far either and I kept my e-mail address.
