I am about to get my first local haircut and am looking for someone who is able to work with the texture and tendencies of my hair (thick-ish and moderately curly) to give me something stylish but not too high maintenance. I am particularly interested in someone who has a flair for bangs. Price is not so much a factor, although I would be happy if I could keep it below $50 or so. Your suggestions are appreciated.
Stylist recommendation
Erin @ Garden Salon
I also recommend Erin at the Garden Salon. She told me everything she was doing and why she was doing it which made me confident that I was getting a good cut. I've been here for 2 years now and I finally have a haircut I like! Plus, the price is reasonable, and you get a 10% discount for being a duke student.
Studio 312
I suggest Studio 312. It's the best haircut I've ever received (~$30).
I go to Karen at Garden
I go to Karen at Garden Salon and really like her as well.
Garden Salon Recommendation
I went to Erin at Garden Salon in downtown. She was great and listened to all my requests. She is very friendly as well. I would highly recommend the salon. They give a 10% Duke student discount. Hair and highlights will run about $100 though but it is high quality.
Garden Salon - Erin Smith
I also recommend Erin Smith at the Garden Salon. She does a really great job on my hair (straight, kind of thin), and is really easy to talk to which makes it more fun! The salon is in downtown Durham and is easy to find and get to. They offer a Duke student discount and I have some coupons for $10 off, I think. Just email me if you are interested in them: lmy2@duke.edu
Sylist-JP at Studio 312
I agree with those who like John Patrick Carver (JP) at Studio 312. It's right off East campus, and he does a real nice cut. I've been going to him since before he had his own place. He's my first choice.
I agree. I've heard great
I agree. I've heard great things about JP. He's a real character with lots of stories. Both my (male) roommates get their hair cut by him.
Kate at Wavelengths
Kate at Wavelengths has been my stylist since I moved here two years ago. She does a fantastic job - I have really thick and wavy hair and in fact, she just cut bangs for me the other day.
Studio 312 - John Patrick
I highly recommend John Patrick at Studio 312. His salon is very convenient, located just off east campus at the intersection of Buchanan and Trinity. His schedule is flexible, his rates are reasonable, and he gives a fine cut. He's also a Durham native, a great guy, and has been the primary stylist for the men's basketball team, including the staff, so he can tell you stories about those dudes. He cuts my hair (I'm a guy) and my housemates' hair (both women).
His number is 919.667.8339. Note that for some reason he doesn't have a greeting on his phone. Don't be dissuaded. Leave a message and he'll get back to you.
Mitchell's, Southpoint
I like Giana and Preethy at Mitchell's at Southpoint. Cut and style is $28.
Hairstylist
When I first arrived to Durham three years ago, Do or Dye was recommended. I still go there. Stephanie gives a great cut! 209 S. Gregson St 667-2366Peace, Cindy
I recommend Wavelengths on
I recommend Wavelengths on 9th St (Durham), they have quite a few stylists, I personally like Donna. The price depends on the stylist ($35-50). I am sure that you can ask for someone that knows all about your type of hair.
Best of luck!
stylist
I go to Erin Smith (Spain I think now that she is married) at the Garden Salon, in downtown Durham. She is great and the salon is really nice. She does a great job with your hair. I have given her as a recommendation before, and everyone is very happy with her. It is a relaxed salon and not overly done. Their prices are moderate (I think a haircut is like $35) and they give a Duke student discount.
Salon in Belk
I got to Shelley at Carmen Carmen, which is the salon inside of Belk at the Southpoint Mall. My hair is wavy but fine, and she does a good job with my style. She is creative and will definitely be willing to do something cool with bangs!

Garden Salon is great!
I found Erin on the GPSC website last year and have been going to her ever since! I have sent several other classmates to The Garden Salon and they love it! Some of my friends have had the owner (Shea) cut their hair and were very pleased with her as well. Oh and you can also schedule appointments online, which is nice too!
