Date: Thursday, October 23, 2008 - 7:00pm - 8:15 pm
Contact: Frank DiSilvestro, fad5@duke.edu
Sponsor: Living Policy Forum
Where: Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, Room 05
Why: Community organizing is an important, yet often misunderstood practice. Recent comments during the presidential campaign have re-ignited the public's interest in the subject. Influential leaders ranging from Martin Luther King to Cesar Chavez could be described as community organizers, yet the practice of "organizing" remains a mystery to many professionals in politics and policy today. This interactive session will address the following questions: ·What is "community organizing"? ·What strategies/approaches work well? ·Who is organizing in Durham and how can I get involved? Ivan Parra, Director of Durham C.A.N., will be the featured presenter. As co-founder of the Latino Community Credit Union and former director of El Centro Hispano, Ivan has extensive experience with local and state-level organizing. Food and drinks will be provided, please RSVP (fad5@duke.edu) if you think you may attend.
