Solomon Burke is the greatest living soul singer, period. In a career that stretches back to his early days as a preacher and gospel radioman in his native Philadelphia, Burke has created powerful, iconic soul music that crackles with the texture of genuine inspiration. Since his 2001 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, the King of Soul has put out three albums’ worth of bold new material, one of which received a long-overdue Grammy.
For this special show, the consistently daring soul pioneer shares the bill with his good friends the Dixie Hummingbirds, who sit with the Blind Boys of Alabama as the reigning monarchs of twentieth century gospel. This veteran group of gospel giants was founded in Greenville, S.C. in 1928: their 82-year old leader, Ira Tucker, joined the group at age 13, and went on to shape the entire soul tradition, from Stevie Wonder and the Temptations to James Brown himself.
