Contact: Volunteer at the Carnivore Preservation Trust!!!
Sponsor: GPSC Community Outreach
Where: Carnivore Preservation Trust, 1940 Hanks Chapel Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312
Why:
Join us for an exciting trip to the Carnivore Preservation Trust in Pittsboro!
Following several hours of service (from 9AM to noon) during which you will be
working to maintain the grounds for the carnivores (don't worry, they
won't be in the cages with you!) you will then receive a free 1.5 hour tour of
the CPT. This is an event not to be missed! However, space is limited to 30
people so please RSVP. For more info on the CPT, please see their
webpage at http://www.cptigers.org/.
Additional information:
The CPT site can be a little tricky to find. Please allow ample travel time so
that you can arrive on site at 12:30 to recieve the safety briefing and sign
the waivers. I recommend the Google maps directions, although we will be carpooling!
The CPT requests that each volunteer bring a donation item. The following is a
list of things they need. I would *highly* recommend bringing the garden tools
as the ones at the CPT are "on their way out" and you will be needing them to
clear brush with during the volunteering part of the day.
* Box of disposable latex gloves (sizes M )
* Bleach
* Paper towels (3-pack or higher)
* Toilet paper (4-pack or higher)
* Vine clipper (small, hand-held)
* Gift cards (any value) to Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe's, Performance
Auto, or any office supply store
* Roughneck Rubbermaid 18 gallon storage bin
* Cash donations (any amount) are also welcome
* Hay fork (long handle)
* Printing paper (8.5x11)
In terms of personal supplies, the CPT advises that groups bring bottled water,
sunscreen, bug spray (organic ones last for about 1.5 hours and need to be
reapplied; if you use a bug spray with DEET in it - be aware that DEET harms
anything plastic), warm clothing on cooler days, and rain gear should the
weather call for it. We have assorted work gloves here, but your group members
could bring their own gloves if they so choose. (A lot of the people who donate
work gloves will buy a pair, bring them, use them, and then donate that pair
following their shift). While bottled water is permitted in our compound, food
and other drinks are not. We do, however, have picnic tables by our education
center where work groups tend to break for lunch (if they've brought lunch).
In terms of clothing, the following is necessary for work in the CPT:
* Closed-toed shoes or boots.
* Long pants.
* Short sleeve shirts are okay, but please bring a long sleeve shirt as
well, because we handle poison ivy.
* Warm clothes on cold days
* Rain gear if necessary
* No inappropriate logos or graphics on T-shirts please.
* Sports bras must be worn with tank tops.
* No bare midriffs.
* Please tie up long hair and take off dangling jewelry, as animals might
be attracted to it.
Any member of your group who is under 18 years of age must bring a copy of our
"Minor Child Release Form" signed by his or her parents. To obtain this form,
please visit our website at www.cptigers.org then click on "Tours," then click
on "Tour Information," then scroll down to where it says "Minor Child Release
Form." Please download the form, acquire parental signatures for all members of
your group who are under the age of 18, and bring the completed forms with you
to CPT on your day of service. In addition, any minor who wishes to take
photographs while at CPT must have his/her parent sign a "Photo Release." This
form can be downloaded from our webpage as well (directly below where you found
the "Minor Child Release Form"). Once again, please bring your completed forms
in with you. Anyone who is 18 years old (and older) can fill out her/his
paperwork upon arrival to the CPT.
