The Vice President for Institutional Equity is the designated compliance officer for the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act states: "No qualified [disabled] person shall, on the basis of [disability], be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity that receives or benefits from federal financial assistance" (Appendix III, §41.51(a)). The Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) works to advance and sustain an environment of internal equity, diversity and inclusiveness for all members of the Duke community by insuring equal access to educational and employment opportunities. Through its various programs and services, OIE supports Duke’s efforts to comply with both the letter and spirit of laws regarding equal opportunity, affirmative action, equal access and prohibited discrimination. OIE, in collaboration with department administrators, develops the University Affirmative Action Plan. OIE also reviews and monitors academic and nonacademic searches; implements and enforces the Duke Harassment Policy; serves as a mechanism for handling complaints of harassment and discrimination; and provides education, training and consultation in the areas of affirmative action, equal opportunity, harassment and discrimination prevention, diversity and cross-cultural relations, and disability compliance.
