Duke Basketball Challenge

Duke Graduate & Professional Students:

You have been challenged by Durham middle schoolers to a basketball game on Feb. 24th!

We will go with 5th & 6th graders to the Duke' women's basketball versus Virginia at 12:30. Then, we will go to Card Gym for the basketball challenge! We have the gym from 2:30 to 4:30pm, so there will be time for a rematch.

If you cannot make it to the women's game, please feel free to join us afterward in Card Gym for the challenge segment of the day. Just make sure you indicate this in your RSVP!

Basketball tickets, pizza, and soda will be provided!

To participate in this joint GPSC Community Service and Duke Durham Neighborhood Partnership event, please email me at jfs13@duke.edu.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Join the Duke Graduate Students team for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" Fundraiser Walk

Did you know that:
* Every five minutes, someone in this country is diagnosed with blood cancer: Every ten minutes, someone loses the fight.
* Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children.
* Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers.
* The myeloma survival rate is only 32 percent.

The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide walk to raise awareness and funds to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.  The Durham Light the Night event will be held at dusk on Tuesday, September 11th at the American Tobacco Campus.

The Duke Graduate Students Team will fundraise for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society together, with creative events, fundraisers and letter campaigns. Then we will walk as a team at the Light the Night event in September, to show solidarity, and that Duke graduate Students are active in the greater community. We're participating in the walk in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancer. These people are the real heroes, and we need your support to help accelerate cures and give hope to patients and their families. Although research is responsible for increasing survival rates for these diseases, the battle is far from over.

To join the Duke Graduate Students group, go to this page and register: http://teams.lightthenight.org/DukeGraduateStudents

Anyone who wants to help lead the team and become a co-captain should email me at eam29@duke.edu

The first organizational meeting will be at 5pm at the LSRC patio on Monday, August 6th.

Band Together

Date: Saturday, May 19, 2007 - 6:30pm - 11:59 pm
Contact: Julie Roy, jar7@duke.edu
Sponsor: Band Together, Big Brothers - Big Sisters of the Triangle, GPSC Community Service
Where: In front of the Lincoln Theatre in downtown Raleigh at 126 E. Cabarrus Street (between Wilmington and Blount Streets)
Why: "Band Together" is a program that brings bands to the Triangle and donates the proceeds from the show to a charity. This year, the profits will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle. We need about 10 people to assist with taking tickets, checking IDs, set-up and break-down, bartending, etc. This is a great deal since normally tickets cost almost $20 and volunteers get in for free!  This year's bands are Son Volt, Kennebec, and Balsa Glider.  For more information you can also see http://www.bandtogethernc.org/home/ or email jar7@duke.edu.
