The Duke New Music Ensemble [dnme] continues its 2009-10 season in a concert entitled "The Eternal Interlock." The concert is centered around Louis Andriessen's monumental "Hoketus" for two groups of six instruments, which explores many of the possibilities of the medieval technique, "hocket." They will also be premiering [dnme] member David Kirkland Garner's "Eilean," a suite for violin and piano inspired by Cape Breton fiddle music. Rounding out the concert is Morton Feldman's "Viola in My Life I," Katherine Hoover's "Antics" for 2 flutes, and Andrew Seager Cole's "Five" for quartet. And since [dnme] is dedicated to performing in unusual venues, this concert will be held in Bone Hall in the Biddle Music building.

[dnme] is a part of the Department of Music, and brings together undergraduate and graduate student performers in presenting music written in the 20th and 21st centuries. Hello everybody,

Take a peek into one of India's fascinating textile crafts......Block Printing..........!!! Try your hand and surprise yourself !!!

Shyamala Rao, a textile artist from Mumbai, India is currently visiting the USA. She will demonstrate the process, and take you on a journey into the world of color, design, borders, motifs, repeat patterns and more…

Patterns are carved on wooden blocks, which are then dipped in color and stamped on to fabric. One can print on wearables like t-shirts, stoles, scarves, even furnishings like curtains, sheets, table linen.....the possibilities are endless..... So bring your own t-shirt or scarf which you want to get printed and print it yourself (only one item is allowed).

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Brad Corrigan (aka Braddigan) is of Dispatch fame, a 3x platinum jam band that achieved worldwide fame with their hits “The General” and “Time Served.” They produced 4 studio albums; their 1996 album Silent Steeples was certified triple platinum. In 2002, their farewell concert in Boston became the largest in independent music history, with an estimated audience of 110,000. In 2007, Dispatch played a series of reunion shows to benefit Zimbabwe, and they sold out 3 nights in a row at Madison Square Garden.

Brandon Busteed (Trinity ’99) is a former Duke Young Trustee and DSG President. He is the founder and CEO of the online drug/alcohol education company Outside The Classroom and started the AlcoholEdu program that all entering freshmen at Duke and many other colleges must complete. He is currently serving on the Board of Governors of the Entrepreneurs' Foundation of New England and the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy Board of Visitors at Duke University.

Coach David Cutcliffe is the new head football coach at Duke. He has 34 years of coaching experience and has been head coach at Ole Miss and offensive coordinator at Tennessee (where he won a national championship). He has coached the likes of Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Erik Ainge, and Brady Quinn.

What is Dharma Music? –- Dharma is a Sanskrit word meaning "the teachings of the Buddha", "the way things are" or simply: "that which holds us back". The Tibetan word for dharma is "chö", which can be translated as: "to heal", "to restore" or "to repair". Dharma music then is music that turns the mind toward the teachings of the Buddha or that which holds us back from harmful action.
