This conference invites graduate students from humanities and social science disciplines to think about how the idea and experience of recession—a sustained national or global-economic downturn that makes itself visible through declines in industrial production, employment, sales, and income—frames the cultural life and livelihood of affected communities, places, and governing bodies. What sort of cultural phenomena—artistic, political, or otherwise—find expression during times of recession? Are there features of recession that seem to transcend history or geography? How does recession change the parameters of social and political institutions? Within the governing structure, how do power dynamics shuffle as blame is distributed between institutions and people? Can we identify specific literary or artistic forms, motifs, and icons that emerge during times of recession?

Working up a job offer is always difficult when you are attempting this tricky negotiation for the first time, whether it is for an industrial position or for a tenure-track appointment in academia. In this presentation, biotech industry columnist (AAAS Science Careers, Contract Pharma Magazine) Dave Jensen will discuss how important it is to understand all of the issues surrounding that prospective job offer, from both sides of the fence. By putting yourself in the shoes of your potential employer, you’ll be able to see exactly how issues like time, budget and personality fit into the equation. In an exercise showing how one applicant moves through the process, Jensen will guide each audience member to see clearly where each of the possible stumbling blocks are; the speaker will help you maximize your job offers to suit your needs. The logic of unregulated capitalism seems to render it dysfunctional, putting society's productive potential at risk. An unexpected revival of Keynesian practices and theories signals the crisis of post-corporatist economic liberalism and an end to the hegemony of neoliberal theory. Wolfgang Maderthaner is a leading Austrian historian and Director of the Institute for the History of the Labor Movement in Vienna.
