Springtime into Summer
An epic HIGH FIVE to all graduate and professional students that made it out to the GPSC ROCKS LDOC event last week! It was so great to see the community coming together to hang out in the fantastic weather. Our apologies for anyone who didn't leave with a t-shirt... we clearly underestimated how AWESOME you guys were and didn't make enough. Don't worry... NEXT YEAR we will come prepared.
This week get PUMPED for film, music, LOVE and the outdoors! Also, GPSC has opened applications for summer funding... putting on a KILLER EVENT this summer? We want to help you!

1. Summer GPSC Funding Applications are OPEN

Have a great idea for summer event? Apply for funding through GPSC!!! Applications which serve the community, have academic value, raise awareness or JUST PLAIN ROCK are favored! The Executive Finance Committee will meet the week of May 13th and make the student group funding decisions.
2. Film and Music Collaborations Concert with Wet Ink Ensemble
When: Tues, April 30th: 8:00-9:30PM

Encounters: with the music of our time presents Wet Ink Ensemble and guests. "Film and Music Collaborations Concert:" New collaborations by Duke graduate student composers Vladimir Smirnoff, David K. Garner, D. Edward Davis, Tim Hambourger, and Jamie Keesecker; with film/media artists Marika Borgeson, Lisa McCarty, Peter Lisignoli, Jolene Mock, and Annabelle Manning. Also, new works by Duke graduate student composers Bryan Christian and Jamie Keesecker.

The Duke American Medical Association chapter presents the (future) Doctor Date Auction! So come out and bid on some of Duke's most eligible bachelor(ettes), all for a good cause. All proceeds will support the community service, advocacy, and educational endeavors of the Duke AMA. So grab your cash, look your best, and who knows--with that dim lighting, those soothing sounds, and a little luck--you might just walk away with the ONE. (unless someone outbids you--so come prepared!)
4. Walk On the Wild Side
When: Thurs, May 2nd: 11AM-12PM
Location: Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Cost: $7; $5 for Gardens members or Duke students/staff

Explore wild North Carolina in these walks through our Blomquist Garden of Native Plants. Join curator Stefan Bloodworth or horticulturist Annabel Renwick on the first Thursday of every month for discussions of seasonal interest. Please dress for the weather. Registration required (parking fees apply).
5. Serve the Homeless Charity Volleyball Tournament
When: Sat, May 4th: 9:00AM
Location: North Cary Park
Cost: $25 Before April 30th, $30 After April 30th

Serve the Homeless is a group dedicated to having a blast playing volleyball while helping homeless families in the Triangle. We raise money through player registrations and through sponsorships which also cover expenses such as T-shirts, court rental, food, etc. PLM Families Together is a 501(c)3 non-profit, so most donations are tax deductible.
6. Duke Medicine Orchestra Spring Concert!
When: Sun, May 5th: 2PM
Location: Reynolds Industrial Theater, Bryan Center

The Duke Medicine Orchestra is proud to present our spring concert! Come for an afternoon of Dvorak, Shostakovich, Bryant, Grieg, and Marquez! We hope to see you there!

8. Duke Commencement Ceremony with Melinda Gates
When: Sun, May 12th: 10AM-11AM
Location: Wallace Wade Stadium
Melinda Gates, philanthropist and businesswoman, will deliver the commencement address at Duke University on Sunday, May 12, 2013. The Commencement Ceremony will also include remarks from a student, conferring of earned degrees, and other recognitions of honors and awards. The ceremony will be begin at 10:00 a.m. with the procession of students at 9:30 a.m. and will be concluded by 11:30 a.m., at which time the students will participate in their individual school or departmental diploma ceremonies.
