Summertime fun at Straw Valley!
Classy Classmates,
Straw Valley is an unusually fantastic cafe and wine bar with an incredible (must see to believe) atmosphere. We're happy to host our first ever FIRST FRIDAY there this week! Come out and enjoy a drink on us, hang out in the bamboo forest with your fellow Duke students and enjoy a lovely bar alternative!

The Duke STEAM Challenges are an opportunity for students - including Graduate and Professional students - to create an interdisciplinary project that explores how the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts - including the Humanities and Social Sciences - and Math) disciplines might contribute to one another for the greater good. The STEAMy Summer Challenge is a video mini-challenge asking students to create an innovative 2-minute video exemplifying the transformative power of STEAM for a chance to win a $1,000 prize. STAY TUNED because the upcoming Fall STEAM Challenge has a $10,000 first prize award. There's no Thirsty Thursday for August, but don't worry, there is still great times with your fellow Dukies! We are taking advantage of Straw Valley Cafe's Friday wine special, so one ticket will get you a beer as usual, but getting together with three other people gets you a bottle of wine. Come enjoy the wonderful atmosphere that Straw Valley Cafe has to offer! Be sure to bring your Duke ID!

2. Summer Make and Take at the Nasher Museum

Outdoor shows will take place rain or shine on the lawn behind the Gardens' Visitor Center. Lawn chairs, picnics & blankets encouraged, dogs are not allowed. Food and beverages, including beer & wine, will be available for purchase. The lawn will open 30 minutes prior to the start of show. Parking is available in the Duke Gardens lots off of Anderson Street and is free after 5 pm.

4. Duke University School of Nursing Student Council – Assemble a Care Pack for the Ronald McDonald House!

Come and help DUSON Student Council assemble care packs for the Ronald McDonald House families! Staying in the hospital is overwhelming and stressful for children and their parents. Student Council has purchased items to assemble care packs that could make a difference for these families, but we need help with assembly. Our goal is to assemble 100 care packs! We are providing pizza and drinks in appreciation of your help.

MEDMentors at the Durham County Youth Home: TUESDAYS
When: Every Tuesday: 6:00-7:00PM and 7:00-8:00PM

MEDMentors is an all volunteer, student led service organization founded by Duke University School of Medicine that aims to promote the long-term health and rehabilitation of adolescents at Durham's juvenile detention facility by providing health education, one-on-one tutoring, literacy classes, and job skills training several times a week. MEDMentors involves students from many different Duke graduate and professional schools. We're always open to volunteers from within the greater Duke Graduate School Community and would LOVE to add new members. A criminal background check and some simple paperwork is required before you volunteer.

Community Workdays at the Duke Campus Farm: THURSDAYS and SUNDAYS
When: Every Thursday and Sunday: 6:00-8:00PM

Head to the Duke Campus Farm this summer for public workdays every Thursday and Sunday from 6-8pm. Throughout the summer, volunteers will be planting, harvesting, weeding and working on small construction projects. Everyone is welcome, including children and those without any background in farming or gardening. It's a great opportunity to learn how food is grown, meet others from the Duke community who are interested in food, and spend some time outside. Meals or snacks from the farm will be provided. Be sure to check our Facebook for workday updates in case of bad weather before heading to the farm. Carpooling is available, please email dukecampusfarm@gmail.com to request a ride.
