The GPSCNews is ripping at the seams with phenomenal events! Registration for Campout is finally here. There is a Forever Duke Block Party with tons of FREE items. GPSC is sponsoring a Thirsty Thursday and a Back-to-School 90's Party. GPSC is also gearing up for their first General Assembly meeting, and accepting applications for student group funding. The Career Center is boasting a variety of professional-development events. We have added a new "sports section" to keep you informed of all Duke Varsity home competitions (See Bottom). The "Did You Know" section provides some awesome news about screening "The Avengers". If you do not know where an event is taking place, click the "Location" links for directions and to see it placed on a map. This GPSCNews is jam-packed with excitement! I hope everyone is as thrilled about reading the news as I am about spreading it!

1. GPSC Basketball Campout 2012

Important Campout Facts:
• Campout takes place 7pm Fri, Sept 7th - 7am Sun, Sept 9th
• Mechanism for grad students to get men's basketball season tickets
• 36 hours of camping out at our Blue Zone Parking Lot
• Random checks called to ensure presence
• Make all the checks --> get entered into lottery
• Top 725 students in lottery can purchase season ticket card
• $200 for season ticket card = 1 ticket to each home game ($10/game)

2. GPSC General Assembly

GPSC is having their first general assembly of the year! Curious about what GPSC does? Come join us at the general assembly, and enjoy some FREE FOOD! 3. Forever Duke Block Party

The Duke Alumni Association invites you to kick the year off right! Forever Duke is a university wide party to welcome you to campus: there will be live music and free food, all surrounded by an unbeatable block party atmosphere to make the First Day of Classes something to look forward to. All students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends are invited! Freshmen - The DAA will be distributing your Freshman Pic-Books!! Sophomores - Forever Duke T-shirt - and extra pic-books from last year! Didn't get one last year? Or want a second one? It's yours! The events included in this year's lottery are:
• Duke Men's Soccer vs. Santa Clara, August 31st, 7:30 PM, Koskinen Stadium (1 entry)

GPSC has now opened its student group affiliation and Fall funding cycles for the 2012-2013 academic year. All graduate and professional student groups, regardless of previous affiliation status are required to re-register by September 9th, 2012. 14. Duke Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert

This Labor Day weekend tradition marks the opening of the Duke Symphony Orchestra's 2012-2013 season. The Symphony will perform music from Broadway and popular movies as well as lighter works by American composers and patriotic fare. Bring a picnic, your family and friends to this outdoor concert and enjoy the ending of summer and the beginning of a new school year with the Duke Symphony Orchestra. Please note: there is no rain location for this concert. The concert will be held on the East Campus main quad and will be canceled in the event of rain.

15. DCSSA basketball competition

The Duke Chinese Student and Scholar Association is having its annual basketball competition in Card gym from 2-4pm on Sep 2nd. Each team should have 3-4 players with at least one female member. Speakers: Dr. John Klingensmith (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs) and Dr. Douglas James (Assistant Dean for academic affairs)
Come to meet representatives from Academic Affairs in the Graduate School to learn about the role they play, and resources they offer, that support the success of graduate students. Services include the English for International Student programs, ongoing department and program reviews, training in college teaching and research ethics, research on best practices, and practical help to navigate steps like forming committees and completion and submission of your thesis or dissertation.

17. Arts Annex Grand Opening

Secured by the Division of Student Affairs to support the growing student arts scene, the UCAE: Arts Annex houses new rehearsal, studio, and programming spaces for student artists and organizations and is also the new location for the Duke Bikes Program. The mission of the Arts Annex is to make the arts accessible to all Duke students by providing increased resources, enhanced programming, and a welcoming environment that inspires ongoing collaborative partnership within the Duke student arts community.Come to the Grand Opening Event to learn more about this new facility.
